If you notice a little more pink in public places during the month of October, there is a good reason – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are many events that take place during the month of October annually to either raise money or awareness – or both.
A Common Battle
The sad truth is that breast cancer is an incredibly common disease in the United States and around the world. In the U.S., roughly 12% of women will be forced to face invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. More than a quarter of a million new breast cancer cases are diagnosed annually in the country. The need for a month dedicated to helping those fighting this disease is obvious when you consider just how many people fight this fight.
While those numbers above are a bit disheartening, there is good news – although women have roughly a 12% chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, the chance of dying from the disease is under 3%. That means many, many women are beating this disease, and efforts like those that take place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month will help even more women become survivors.
What Can You Do?
If you would like to help, the best thing to do is get involved with a reputable, trusted charity. Perhaps the easiest option is simply to make a financial donation to the charity of your choice. Always look closely into any charity before making a donation to be sure that it is known for delivering on its promises and making the most of donations. If you’d like to go further, consider getting involved with Breast Cancer Awareness Month events in your area.
